Nelson Mandela Passed away

 


Nelson Mandela, who guided South Africa from the shackles of apartheid to multi-racial democracy and became an international icon of peace and reconciliation, died Thursday (5 December 2013) at age 95. He was born born 18 July 1918, he is a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election.

Mangalyan launch

President Pranab Mukherjee today (November 5, 2013) congratulated ISRO for the successful launch of ‘Mangalyan’, Mars Orbiter Spacecraft, and said it was a significant milestone that will inspire more scientists to make greater strides in achieving goals.  In his message to Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), K. Radhakrishnan, the President said: “This launch of India’s first dedicated Mars Orbiter Spacecraft is a significant milestone in the progress of our space programme and space applications.  The blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR), located on the island of Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh coast. If the Orbiter reaches its destination successfully by Sept 2014, India would be the fifth country to reach out to Mars.

Largest naval offshore patrol vessel commissioned

 The Indian Navy inducted into service its largest offshore patrol vessel (OPV), INS Sunayna, at the Southern Naval Command here on today(October 15, 2013). Vice-Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the command who commissioned the 105-metre long ship, designed and built by the public sector Goa Shipyard, told the media that the OPV added to the command’s teeth and that it would soon be deployed for anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden

Indian navy submarine explosion

An Indian navy submarine ( INS Sindhurakshak) with about 18 sailors on board has caught fire after an explosion and sank at a port in Mumbai. Navy spokesperson Narendra Vispute said on Wednesday(August14, 2013) that efforts were being made to ascertain the safety of the personnel feared to be trapped on board the diesel-powered submarine. The blast occurred shortly after midnight and it took fire-fighters several hours to douse the blaze. Officials say the diesel-powered vessel was badly damaged and remains partly submerged at its berth.
